The YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo is proud to work closely with Townsquare Media to promote American Heart Month, raising awareness of heart disease and how to work toward preventing it. Managing weight, managing diabetes, getting regular cardio exercise—these are just a few ways to ensure that you're doing the right things to manage your heart health.

The Y Can Help!

Exercise

The CDC recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic activity each week, or 30 minutes a day of intense activity, three days a week.

  • Check out our free-to-member group exercise classes. With so many to choose from for all levels and abilities, there really is something to get everyone's heart rate up.
  • Come see our aquatics centers and learn about our programming! We offer three pools between the Maple and Portage Ys, including a resistence therapy pool. Whether you are a seasoned swimmer or not, water exercise can be for everyone!
  • Try our cardio machines, from standard treadmills, ellipticals, to stationary bikes, rowing machines, stairclimbers, and more—the the Y has designed its studios with top-of-the-line MATRIX equipment to keep you inspired. The Y at Maple even offers 24/7 access!
Managing Diabetes

Prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes all carry an increased risk of developing heart disease. This is because diabetes can cause high blood sugar, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, all of which contribute to the development of heart disease. By keeping your diabetes under control, you can reduce your risk of developing heart disease and other serious health conditions.

  • The Y is offering a new DIABESITY DEFENSE PROGRAM for anyone 18 years and older, overweight (BMI = 25), at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes indicated by a confirmatory blood value, prediabetes determined by clinical diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes (GDM) during a previous pregnancy, or a qualifying risk score using the CDC's prediabetes risk test. Email us to show an interest in this program.
Managing Weight

Your body weight also plays a huge role in your heart health, often because it comes hand-in-hand with many other issues. Losing just 5-10% of your body weight can help you improve blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and reduce cholesterol levels, ultimately decreasing your risk of heart disease.

  • We know this can be hard. The Y can provide a community of support to cheer you on your health journey!
  • Join this month and we'll add a free In-BODY scan (a $15 value) for your baseline measurements as you work toward your healthy living journey. [Must be redeemed before March 5, 2025. Details at our Member Services desks.]
