Aquatics Classes

Learning to swim at the YMCA is more than just stroke development. Trained, certified, professional staff gives each class participant personal attention to ensure quality and safety. YMCA aquatic programs are available from 6 months to adult age levels.

Classes are taught in small groups with others of their own skill level. Each participant is assessed to assure they are in the correct level. Classes are fun-filled and full of energy! Each class emphasized water safety as an important element of the program. The YMCA Core Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are incorporated into all of our classes.

Whether you're a beginning swimmer or have been swimming for awhile, but would like to improve your technique, the YMCA Aquatics Program is for you.

Class Descriptions
Shrimp - Kippers - Inia - Perch: Ages 6-36 months

Teach your child to have fun in this waer adjustment class for parent-child teams. Our staff will work with you to teach basic water skills, and safety through songs, games and repetition.

Eel: Ages 3-5

Prerequisite: Completion of Pike. An intermediate level of swim and safety instruction. Your child must be able to swim horizontally with a small cube.

Gym & Swim: Ages 3-5

Children will have 3-minute gym activity before heading to the pool for a 30-minute swim lesson. Pike/Eel swim level.

Pike: Ages 3-5

The first step to independence in the water for your child lies in this class, where our staff will creatively teach beginning swim and safety skills in a caring and safe environment without the parent.

Pike & Parent: Ages 2 1/2-4

Designed for the student who has completed the Inia/Perch class or is ready for Pike level skills, but prefers to participate with their parent. Our staff will work with you and your child to prepare them for the Pike level class.

Ray - Starfish: Ages 3-5

Prerequisite: Completion of Eel and the ability to swim part of the class without flotation. Our experienced staff will teach your child skills in rotary breathing, stroke development and floating in this advanced 45-minute class.

Tennis-N-Swim: Ages 3-5

Participate in a swim class for 30 minutes of water fun, then it's off to the courts ffor 30 minutes of tennis. Parents are responsible for the pool to land transition. We have racquets to lend.

Backyard Pool Lessons:

Swim lessons for your kids this summer in your own backyard. Recruit 12 kids to join your class. Cost depends on distance from the YMCA. Call Glenda VanStratton at 345.9622 x127 to schedule.

Flying Fish - Shark: Ages 6-12

Prerequisite: Completion of Minnow-Fish. These advanced levels take your child through the mastery of the breaststroke and the butterfly. Endurance, fitness, and pre-swim team skills will be emphasized. Safety, including an introduction to lifesaving, will also be taught.

Guppy: Ages 6-12

Prerequisite: Completion of Polliwog. Your child will continue to build upon the skills they learned at the Polliwog level. Our staff will help them master the front crawl, teach then the improtance of proper body alignment and introduce the back crawl.

Learn to Swim: ages 6-13

Teach your child a valuable skill they will use for a lifetime. Child must be receiving free lunch and/or have a family income of $15,000 or less. Proof is required. There are no program scholarships available. $5 fee and enrollment is limited to 15.

Minnow - Fish: Ages 6-12

Prerequisite: Completion of Guppy. Your child's endurance will increase in these two intermediate levels, allowing our staff to teach them back stroke and breaststroke skills.

Polliwog: Ages 6-12

The first level YMCA program helps your child with the beginning skills of water adjustment, floating, basic water safety, and paddling with a floatation device.

Private Lessons: Youth

Do you, a family member, or a friend want to learn how to swim one-on-one with an instructor? Let our experienced staff guide you. Members $13 per 30-minute session, Participant member $20 per 30-minute session. 45-minute sessions are available.

Tennis-N-Swim: Ages 6-12

Participate in a swim class for 45 minutes of water fun, then it's off to the courts for 45 minutes of tennis. Parents are responsibile for the pool to land transition. We have racquets to lend.

Wet Ball (Water Polo) : ages 6-10

Take this first step on the road to learning the exciting sport of water polo! Taught by a member of the Payara Water Polo staff, students will learn positions, basic terms, ball handling and water polo concepts. A great class to prepare middle schoolers for age group level play, as students use life vests and floaties. This is non-contact. Prerequisite: completion of Polliwog swim level.

Wild Water Fitness: ages 8-12 New!

Get ready for a new way to have some water fun! children will enjoy this different approach to water exercise that emphasizes cardio-fitness, strength and flexibility. A fast-paced, aerobic class of exciting water games, races and challenges - goes beyond swimming laps. Children should be comfortable in all depths of the pool.

Participate in a class demonstration on Monday, June 11 or Wednesday, June 13 at 5:30p in the large pool.

Water Polo Clinics: ages 11+ New!

Six clinics are designed to break down the basic skills needed to play water polo on a competitive level. Clinics offered: Fundamentals; Passing/Shooting; Perimeter Offense/Defense; Hold Set/Defender (Center); Goalie; and Plays.

All clinics include classroom and water skills. Sign up for one or more clinics; we recommend that you sign up for the Fundamentals Clinic and then choose the one(s) to develop your individual skill level. Don't miss out on this summer water polo experience that is taking Southwest Michigan by storm.

YMCA Swim Team:

Members only program Southwest Y Michigan Swimming (SWYM)
Prerequisite: Completion of Minnow Level and/or ability to swim two lengths of the pool in a perfected front and back crawl.
